Applications may leave some trace data behind when you uninstall them. The best example is the Start menu, where you can find shortcuts which point to files that don't exist anymore. There is no conventional way of telling how many broken shortcuts are on a hard drive, but you can turn to a specialized application if you wish to find out. Broken Shortcut Fixer can find and fix faulty shortcuts on your hard drive and delete the ones that it can't repair. The operation should not take more than a minute or two, thanks to the software's straightforward functionality.

The application is absolutely free and you can have it up and running almost instantly. You will spend more time selecting a destination path and creating shortcuts than waiting for the wizard to install the core components. Broken Shortcut Fixer works on Windows XP, Vista, Win 7 and Win 8 and it doesn't have any special requirements.

All you have to do is select a partition and click a button, on a clean and simple user interface and the application will start scanning your shortcuts right away. Additionally, you can tick an option if you wish to skip remote shortcuts. It takes between one and two minutes to complete the scanning process. While scanning, the application will fix the broken shortcuts it finds, using the operating system's link resolving method.

Shortcuts that can't be fixed are listed on the same interface, when the scanning is complete. Besides their full paths, the application will display recommendations as well, which usually involve deleting the shortcuts. You may select one or more items by clicking their check boxes and hit the Delete button, located beneath the list. You can also investigate the shortcuts in Windows Explorer, just by double clicking them on Broken Shortcut Fixer's interface.

Pros

The application automatically resolves broken shortcuts, while scanning. If it can't fix certain shortcuts, it will display them in a list and you can delete them with a single click.

Cons

A progress bar, displayed during the scanning process, would be a welcomed addition. With Broken Shortcut Fixer, you will be able to fix or remove any broken shortcut on your computer.
